About Rioja

Rioja is Spain’s most famous wine region. It is mostly located in the autonomous region of La Rioja. Many consider that both Ribera del Duero and Priorat have surpassed Rioja in terms of quality.

The Rioja district consists of three parts:

  • Rioja Alta,
  • Rioja Alavesa
  • Rioja Baja Oriental

Red Rioja wines are almost always blends of several grape varieties: Tempranillo, Garnacha and in some cases also Graciano and Mazuela.

Rioja wines are often aged for a long time in barrels, which means that the quality and type of the oak barrels have a very important influence on the taste of the wine. American oak barrels with a low degree of toasting are usually used, giving the vinera a vanilla tone that goes very well with the Tempranillo grape.
