About Piedmont

Piedmont (the land at the foot of the mountains) is famous for its wines, which are among the best in Italy. South-eastern Piedmont can be described as a giant valley between the Alps in the north and the Apennines in the east, with central towns such as Asti, Alba and Gavi. The most important wine regions are located in the areas around these towns.

The main red grape varieties in Piedmont are Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera. Dolcetto matures first and produces wines with rich tannins and lots of fruit. Nebbiolo produces wines with high acidity, alcohol and lots of tannins. Barbera is Piedmont’s most widely planted red grape variety, producing high acid but low tannins.

The most famous appellations in Piedmont are Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera d’Asti, Nebbiolo d’Alba and Langhe.
