About Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine region in southern Rhône. It is considered one of the best in France. The name means “new castle of the pope” and comes from the fact that the pope’s summer residence was located here for a time in history.

The area is about 3,350 hectares and produces about 12 million bottles per year. The majority of the production is red wines (95%). The soil is very varied. That is why most wines are made as blends from different parts (cuvée).

The main grape is Grenache. A total of 18 different grape varieties are allowed in the wines. The most important are

  • Grenache
  • Cinsaut
  • Mourvèdre
  • Syrah

Some producers use all 13 traditional grape varieties. Others are single vineyard wines made from Grenache.
