About Bordeaux

The wine regions around the city of Bordeaux are often ranked as the world’s most prominent for quality red wines. The wines are usually blends of several grapes where the most important grapes are

Red:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Cabernet Franc
  • Merlot
  • Malbec
  • Petit Verdot

White:

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Semillion
  • Muscadelle

Informally, Bordeaux is divided into two sides. The left and right banks on each side of the Gironde river. Bordeaux is formally divided into sub-regions (appellations) where the quality areas above all are

  • Médoc – left bank
  • Haut Médoc – the left bank which is in turn divided into
    • St. Estéphe, Paulliac, St. Julien, Margaux, Listrac, Moulis
  • Pomerol – right bank
  • Saint-Émilion – right bank

On the left bank the Cabernet Sauvignon grape dominates. Usually the wines are blended with Cabernet Franc and Merlot. On the right bank, Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes dominate. The wines here are often blended with Malbec and Petit Verdot.
