About Barolo

Barolo is a wine region in Piedmont in northwestern Italy. The area is known for its tannic quality wines made from the Nebbiolo grape. The Barolo area is next to Barbaresco, another famous wine region in Piedmont.

The wines consist of 100% Nebbiolo. They are produced in two main types, traditional and modern. A traditional Barolo is very tannic and requires long aging. For wines of the more modern style, the grapes are harvested later when the tannins have matured. In addition, more oak barrel storage is used. This allows the wines to be drunk young. But these can also be stored.

The map shows all the named wineyards in Barolo (Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive) which can be described as Italy’s equivalent of France’s Lieux-dits or Crus.
