About Argentina as a wine country

Argentina is the world’s fifth largest wine producer and thus also South America’s largest. The country’s highest vineyards are located at an altitude of 3,100 metres in the Salta region in the north. The wine regions extend almost 2000km south to the Chubut district, the second southernmost wine region in the world.

The nature and geography, especially in the river valleys, offer great variations in soil types and mesoclimates.

The main districts are located in the regions of Salta and Mendoza. In the Calchaqui valleys (Salta), Argentina’s national grape varieties Malbec and Torrontés are cultivated in particular. Mendoza is home to 80% of the country’s wine production and is the only region with an appellation system.
